Lionheart Theatre Presents 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof'

Don’t miss this classic play by Southern playwright Tennessee Williams at the Lionheart Theatre running through Sept. 25.

To celebrate the 100th birthday of Tennessee Williams, Lionheart Theatre presents one of his best-known plays, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof. If you don’t do anything else during your September weekends, try to make it to this production. You won’t be disappointed.

Just as some of the characters in this play eves drop on others, the audience sits rapt as they “eves drop” on this wealthy, but unraveling Southern family watching each of its members seek survival in his own way.

A strong ensemble cast brings the play to life. Sarah Frey commands the stage as Maggie the Cat and propels the story in Act One as she explores the inner working of the Pollitt family and her own consuming desire for the survival of her marriage.  Rial Ellsworth is powerful as Big Daddy Pollitt and Tanya Caldwell gives a believable and poignant portrayal of the family matriarch, Big Mama. Ben Humphrey, playing the part of the seemingly impenetrable Brick, saying nothing and everything, skillfully brings his character to life as we watch him begin to face himself.

The stage is used-well. The audience feels as if they are in the room with the family as the upstage area is used as the gallery leading outdoors and to other areas of the house.

Bob Smith, director of Cat loves working with his talented ensemble cast. The thing Smith says he likes best about directing is “helping the actors learn things about their character.” He points out that, “this play includes a rich cast of characters and from time to time during the story it seems to be about one of these characters and then another.”

As Smith says, this classic Tennessee Williams tale is “a play about a bed. The bed is the source of contention and redemption within the story. Life, death, love, sex, greed, fear, desperation and of course mendacity, are just a few of the themes running through Cat On a Hot Tin Roof.”

Make plans to take in this play on Friday or Saturday nights or a Sunday afternoon on one of the upcoming September weekends. You’ll be glad you did.
