Retired Lt. Colonel Remembered After Being Killed in I-575 Wreck

LTC Byron Craig Brown (Ret), 67, of Peachtree Corners, GA, died in a traffic accident on Nov 4 in Cobb County.

He was born Nov 2 in Aurora, CO, to Byron Winfield and Eleanor Jean Comolli Brown of Greenville, OH. He and his two brothers, Bruce Allen Brown, Manhattan Beach, CA, and Gary Lee Brown, Centralia, WA, moved with their parents to Army posts in Ft. Sam Houston, TX, Ft. Belvoir, VA, and Japan.

All three Brown brothers attained Eagle Scout rank and continued the military tradition of the family.

Byron graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in Alexandria, VA, and completed his BS in Political Science at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN, in 1967. He completed a Master of Business Administration from the University of Florida.

From the University of North Florida he earned both a Master of Public Administration and Master of Sciences in Allied Health Services. He graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and later the U.S. Army War College in Carlyle Barracks, PA, in 1992.

Byron served with the U.S. Army Special Forces in Long Binh, Viet Nam, and Schofield Barracks, HI. He later transferred to Military Intelligence in Jacksonville, FL; Ft. Sheridan, IL; Ft. McPherson, GA; and Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm with Third Army Headquarters.

He received four bronze stars, two for valor, the Combat Infantryman’s badge, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Service Medal, and many other service and commendation medals.

After retirement, he had positions in property management and security management in the Atlanta area, including the Marcus Jewish Community Center.

Byron had a lifetime interest in foot races and enjoyed his friends in the Run and See Georgia track club. He neared his goal of 2000 races. Byron was known for his characteristic acts of service to family, friends, and church, especially his tender connections toward children and animals.

Besides his brothers, Byron is survived by Marylyn, his wife of 42 years, nine nieces and nephews, and three cousins, Becky Coop, Batavia, OH, Steve (and Pam) Ashley, Phoenix, AZ, and Patty (and John) Watts, Santa Barbara, CA.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be considered to St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church.

Visitation will be Saturday, November 10, 4:00-7:00 p.m., at Crowell Brothers Funeral Home, 5051 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Peachtree Corners – Phone 770-448-5757.

The memorial service will be Sunday, November 11, 3:00 p.m., in the sanctuary of St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, 1978 Mt. Vernon Road, Dunwoody, GA 30338 – Phone 770-393-1424.

Interment will follow at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
