Damage can occur because of leaking pipes, rain, or flooding, and mold begins to grow quickly! Mold develops in only about one week of exposure to wet conditions. Why should you be concerned with mold? There are different types of mold, and some of them can cause major health issues. Mold fungi can cause allergies and respiratory problems. Stain fungi are not harmful, but they will discolor the wood. Decay fungi use the structure they are growing on as a food source and will compromise the strength of the wood. You don’t want this stuff in your home! We should be concerned with fungal growth because of potential structural failure, as well as many health concerns. Fungal growth can cause allergies, asthma, eczema, lung diseases including bleeding into the lungs, and liver damage.
