GAC Student Finishes 3rd in Tar Heel Fencing Competition

Wesley McDowell, who also competed this summer in the USA Fencing Olympics, scored in third place at the University of North Carolina game.

Wesley McDowell, a sabre fencer and sophomore at , placed third in the UNC Tar Heel Open fencing competition. The competition took place the weekend of Sept. 2.

"Wesley has gotten his 2012-13 season off to a fantastic start," said his father, Gerald McDowell, who's also the executive director Lilburn Community Improvement District. 

There were also several members from the Carolina NCAA D1 team in the competition, he added.

Wesley McDowell, who lives in Stone Mountain, has been a fencer for four years. His most recent competition was in June and July at the 2012 USA Fencing National Championships, a division of the U.S. Olympic games. He fenced outstanding in the California games.

In April, the GAC student also participated in the Peach State Open ROC and the Georgia Games 2012 Fencing Championships at Kennesaw Mountain Regional High School.
