Winter is Coming

Georgia weather is always unpredictable: Last week was fairly cool, but before then no one was busting out the peacoats and heavy jackets because of 70-degree temperatures.

I guess autumn still has some time to wind down since the first day of winter isn't until Friday, Dec. 21.

And Friday's definitely going to feel like winter, since Weather.com projects the day will bring a chilly high of 49 degrees Fahrenheit and low of 32 degrees to Norcross. Earlier in the week, the high isn't expected to sink below 59 degrees.

Being the winter solstice, Dec. 21st is also the shortest day of the year--meaning that we get the shortest amount of sunlight, according to Almanac.com. The website says the sun is expected to rise at 7:38 a.m. and set at 5:32 p.m. in Norcross, with a day length of 9 hours and 54 minutes.

Cold weather and shorter daylight hours aren't the only things the day is projected to bring, though. Dec. 21 also is, coincidentally, when the world is apparently ending.

According to NASA, the end-of-the-world theory started with Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians. Some believe the planet is headed toward Earth.

The collision, which would be catastrophic, was initially predicted for May 2003. When nothing happened, doomsday was moved forward to December 2012 and linked to the end of one of the Mayan calendars.

NASA also believes the world won't end Dec. 21, either. Here's what they had to say about the matter:

The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.
