Severe Weather Possible for Norcross Thursday Evening

Hail, lightning and winds up to 70 miles per hour could occur from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. June 13.

The Norcross Police Department has sent out a Nixle alert concerning the potential for severe weather Thursday evening (June 13).

Widespread thunderstorms, brief heavy rain, strong wings up to 70 miles per hour, frequent lightning and large hail could occur, according to the alert. The risk for these strong storms for Gwinnett County is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

"The Norcross Police Department does not typically send awareness statements for the potential of afternoon thunderstorms in the summertime; however, there is a need for increased awareness as this particular front approaches our area this afternoon and evening," says the message.

According to the National Weather Service, the chance of rain is 50 to 60 percent.

A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE INTO NORTH GEORGIA THIS AFTERNOON AND MOVE ACROSS THE AREA THROUGH TONIGHT. THE FRONT WILL BE SUPPORTED BY AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND WILL ENCOUNTER AN INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE AIRMASS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE FRONT AND PROGRESS SOUTH TO SOUTHEAST THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THERE IS ENOUGH UNCERTAINTY THAT WIDESPREAD SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE ACROSS THE AREA.
