Independence Day Celebration in Norcross Is Still a Go

Despite the hazardous weather that's expected, the city says the annual July 3rd event will take place whether it rains or shines.

Norcross' Independence Day Celebration on July 3 is still taking place despite the hazardous weather that's expected, according to the city.

"Right now we're still moving forward," said Mary Beth Bender, the superintendent for Norcross' Parks and Recreation. "We're usually rain or shine. The only reason [we would postpone] is if there was lightning or heavy rain."

But heavy rain is expected for Wednesday and much of the week. In addition to the 100 percent chance of rain that the National Weather Service predicts for both Wednesday and Thursday, there is a flash flood watch from 8 a.m. July 3 to 8 a.m. Friday, July 5. The watch is for several counties in the metro Atlanta area, including Gwinnett and Norcross.

Here's some of the message concerning the flood watch:

AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH OVER THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY WILL BRING ABUNDANT MOISTURE TO NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA THIS WEEK. THIS SETUP WILL RESULT IN HEAVY RAINFALL ACROSS NORTH AND CENTRAL GEORGIA WEDNESDAY THROUGH EARLY FRIDAY.

RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES ARE LIKELY OVER THE WATCH AREA...WITH LOCALIZED HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE. THIS RAINFALL...COMBINED WITH WET ANTECEDENT CONDITIONS...WILL BE SUFFICIENT TO PRODUCE FLASH FLOODING IN THE WATCH AREA.

Last year, Norcross saw a significant amount of rainfall in the evening for its July 3rd event, which draws in up to 15,000 people every year. While the fireworks were delayed due to the rain, the sparkling lights in the sky, the music and other activities still went on.

Norcross' Independence Day celebration will start at 4 p.m. July 3 as planned. Kids' attractions and street vendors will kick off the event, and then the music begins at 6:30 p.m. with Heroes opening for Mother's Finest, who takes the stage at 8:30 p.m. The fireworks are planned to begin around 9:30 p.m.
