Today and tomorrow, expect inside lane closures on I-85 during off-peak hours. The closures are happening as part of the I-85 Express Lane Project, in which the current HOV lane is being converted to a HOT lane by the Georgia DOT. The road work will only happen if weather permits.
The daytime work will occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Wed., June 1 and Thurs., June 2 between Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Pleasantdale Road. Expect the inside lane in both the northbound and southbound direction to be closed.
The nighttime work will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Wed., June 1 and Thurs., June 2.
On Wednesday night, lanes will be closed in the following locations:
-Beaver Ruin Road to Indian Trail Road, southbound HOV lane
-Old Peachtree Road to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, northbound HOV lane
-Old Peachtree Road to Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road, southbound HOV lane and two adjacent left lanes
On Thursday night, lanes will be closed in the following locations:
-near Indian Trail Road, southbound HOV lane
-Sugarloaf Parkway to Old Peachtree Road, northbound HOV lane
-Sugarloaf Parkway to Old Peachtree Road, southbound HOV lane and two adjacent left lanes
According to a DOT announcement, up to four lanes of the highway could be closed after midnight. They anticipate that traffic may need to be paced after 11 p.m.
The project includes the installation of 16 miles of fiber optic cable along I-85 and SR 316. When the project is complete, transit buses, motorcycles, alternative fueled vehicles and vehicles with three or more passengers will be allowed to use the inside HOT lane for free, while single- and double-occupant vehicles can pay a variably priced toll to use the lane.
