Water Park Coming to Malibu Grand Prix in Norcross

Construction at the local park will start in the next two weeks, with a tentative open date for Memorial Day weekend.

A water park is coming to the city of Norcross later this spring.

The new attraction will be inside Malibu Grand Prix off Brook Hollow Parkway. The theme park just signed all the permits for construction and installation, which should start in the next two weeks, according to General Manager Trey Young.

The water park will consist of three phases, which will be completed during the off seasons through 2015. The first phase is known as Buccaneer Cove, which will be the biggest attraction of the three and aims to be unveiled Memorial Day weekend starting May 25. Buccaneer Cove will consist of seven slides, wet tunnels, spray loops, an interactive aqua dome, spray cannons, cabanas, an eating area and more.

The second and third phases are yet to be determined, but the second phase will most likely be a retention pond, according to Young.

He described the overall attraction as being similar to Skull Island at Six Flags, and the same crew that built it also will construct the Malibu version. The only part of Malibu that the water-play structure will replace is the grand prix track for adults, he added.

While the Norcross park has had the Brook Hollow Parkway location for years, the vision for a theme park started two years ago. Because many of Malibu's current attractions, such as the go carts and mini-golf, take place outside, it's hard for families and guests to enjoy the park on hot summer days.

Additionally, there isn't a water park in the area, so it will no doubt bring crowds to Norcross. And the city will benefit in other ways, too, though.

"This ride is bringing in roughly a $1.8 million project to the city," said Young. Construction will bring in 50 workers, and 50 other employees are expected to stay on an ongiong basis as the water park opens, he added.

Malibu in Norcross will be the second park within its parent company, Palace Center Entertainment, to have a water attraction of this kind, with California being the first.

"We'll be the first ones on the East Coast to have one," said Young.

While the prices for full-day admission still is being determined, Young said guests shouldn't expect it to cost more than $19.99 per person.
