The Bundt Stops Here

Each week, Norcross Patch profiles a different business in the area. This week, we talk to Kathy D'Abate, owner of The Bundt Stop.

When her father had cancer, Kathy D'Abate quit her job in the mortgage industry to take care of him. She didn’t want to return to the corporate world so she asked herself what she wanted to do instead.

“I love to sing. I love dogs. And I love to bake,” she told Patch.

So last July, she began baking. She experimented with bundt cake recipes and handed out free samples at summer concerts at Thrasher Park. People liked her cake morsels, and a business was born.

These days, she has a growing business called The Bundt Stop. The cakes range from a single serving to a 10-inch cake that serves 16 people. She caters weddings, birthday parties, office parties and other events.

She also specializes in organic, vegan, sugar-free and gluten-free cakes, inspired in part because her husband has diabetes. She has a cake named in memory of her father, Daddy’s Chocolate. And she has begun making dog biscuits, relying on Boris, one of the four Great Danes she has rescued, as a taste tester. The dog treats are aptly named Boris Bundts.

“He loves the smell of butter. He comes running,” she said of her dog.

For now, you can only find D’Abate’s bundt cakes by contacting her directly or stopping by the Whistle Stop Farmer’s Market at Thrasher Park. On a recent Tuesday, she and her mother, Cookie McGlaun, set out cake samples at the Farmer’s Market and answered questions from potential customers.

“I’m just trying to see if there’s a niche for this. I’d like to have my own bakery. That’s my goal,” D'Abate said.

What is your business and when did you start?

The Bundt Stop is a local bakery catering to the Whistle Stop Farmer's Market. We make bundt cakes from scratch using fresh ingredients from bite-sized up to 10-inch (serving 16 people). I started creating my recipes in July 2011.

 What makes you unique?

When someone says, "Wow, this is the best cake, and it's gluten-free?"

What are some of the more interesting cakes you have made?

Maple Bacon, Boston Cream, Banana Split, and Apple Pie

What is rewarding about owning The Bundt Stop?

When someone's eyes light up after taking a bite of a cake. Or when someone tells me that my cake made their friend's day after having gall bladder surgery and being on a restricted diet.

What is challenging about owning The Bundt Stop?

Whether it’s traditional, gluten-free or vegan – creating the perfect recipe that meets my standards.

How do you serve Norcross?

By creating bundt cakes in a variety of sizes, in traditional and custom flavors and catering to gluten-free and vegan needs.

The Bundt Stop sells cakes at the Whistle Stop Farmer’s Market in Historic Norcross on Tuesdays from 4 to 8 p.m. through September. Or you can contact Kathy D’Abate directly at 770-634-1260 or K8Dab8@gmail.com.
