Forget Black Friday: Shop Small Business Saturday in Norcross

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on.

American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked.

With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Norcross.

Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. In Norcross, there are 100 companies listed on the Small Business Saturday website as participants.

Those businesses include:

  • Anna Balkan Jewelry Gallery
  • AbbyGayles
  • The Shops of Antique Traditions
  • Good Things Home & Garden
  • The Purple Poppy Shoppe
  • Taste of Britain

Everyone has locally owned businesses in their community, and shopping on Small Business Saturday is the perfect way to give back to the businesses you know and love in your community.

"We're so fortunate to have Small Business Saturday," said Lorraine White, the co-owner of The Shops of Antique Traditions in downtown Norcross. "So many of the shoppers that come in our store are all very supportive of shopping small, anyway, but on that day especially, it brings awareness to the fact that we're a small business, and Norcross offers small businesses."

The Shops of Antique Traditions, which covers the four businesses of Home Norcross, Reminisce, Details Boutique and Antique Traditions, offers a wide variety of items including furniture, baby gifts, home decor, seasonal items, jewelry, handbags and artwork.

White explained that 2012 is the third year they're participating in SBS, and they're having specials all day: Patrons will receive 15 percent storewide, in addition to a free surprise gift if they come in before 2 p.m.

A $25 credit also is given to customers if they register their American Express card online on the SBS website, White added.

Many other downtown businesses are having specials and featuring new items, too. Chalk It Up Norcross inside The Purple Poppy Shoppe is featuring collections of Spartina 449 accessories and Trapp Candles, and customers who spend at least $25 will receive a discount on their next in-store purchase.

At Anna Balkan Jewelry Gallery, the designer's new Silver Collection will debut, and it includes the rich fall and winter colors of red, green and purple in silver metal. The gallery also just launched its Russian Collection, which has a variety of hues and is described as blending "strength and artistry as an invitation to powerful independence and constant renewal," according to the gallery.
