Dick's Sporting Goods Coming to Peachtree Pkwy

Residents eagerly await the Sept. 28 opening of the new Dicks Sporting Goods on Hwy 141, the old location of a Kroger supermarket.

With encouragement from his grandmother and his own determination, in 1948 Dick Stack opened a small store in Binghamton, New York.

At just 18 years old, Stack had some forward-thinking ideas to share with his employer. His ideas were summarily rejected, leaving him discouraged. Soon thereafter, while visiting his grandmother, he confided in her his disappointments. From an old cookie jar she took $300 dollars which she had saved through the years, gave it to him and said “Dick, always follow your dreams.”

With that money he opened a small bait and tackle shop and within 10 years had customers asking him to expand his business to include other sports equipment. From that Dick's Sporting Goods was born.

Jerry Moss, the construction superintendent, allowed Patch to take a tour of the work in progress. It was fun to see the “before,” looking forward to seeing the “after.”
