Weekend Planner: Norcross Car Show, Olympians and More

See what's happening locally this weekend (May 17-19).

It seems like there's a little bit of everything for everyone this weekend in downtown Norcross.

Olympic athletes Lolo Jones, Ashton Eaton, Reese Hoffa and Queen Harrison are coming to Greater Atlanta Christian School at 7 p.m. Friday to compete in the Atlanta Grand Prix, a professional track meet that will allow fans to interact with some of the world’s top track and field Olympians. More than a hundred Atlanta-area high school track and field athletes will be participating in the meet, too. The Velveteen Playboys will be performing live, and while admission is free, donations will be taken to support the Boston bombing victims as well as Track and Field Athletes Association. Read more about the event here.

The Lionheart Theatre Co. has gone back to its roots just for this weekend at Norcross Presbyterian Church, where the community theatre was originally located, by putting on a performance there called, "If the Good Lord's Willing and the Creek Don't Rise!" The zany comedy is about an eccentric old man whose house caters to love-sick teenagers, irate school bus drivers, and an occasional artist or two. Tickets are $10 and the show started Thursday, but it runs Friday and Saturday. Click here for more details.

On Saturday, more than 300 cars and motorcycles will be parked along the streets of historic downtown for the annual Norcross Car Show. Expect lots of music, raffles, good eats and more, with all proceeds going to the Kristi Memorial Scholarship to help with students in medical school. The show starts at 9 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m. all over downtown.

Later that day, the Pinckneyville Elementary chorus, jazz band and symphonic orchestra is performing a free "pops concert" at 6:30 p.m. in Thrasher Park.

And if that's not enough, Anna Balkan Jewelry Studio is hosting a "Queen of Hearts" party from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., also on Saturday. With a portion of the proceeds benefiting Lionheart Theatre, the event invites guests to dress up as their favorite queens to play along with other Lionheart thespians who will be in full character. It'll be an evening of giveaways, music, prizes, refreshments and more.
