Norcross to Host Art Fundraiser for Aimee Copeland

The city of Norcross is hosting a fundraising event for Aimee Copeland called Art for Aimee on Sept. 29, and Copeland herself will be attending.

Copeland is the 24-year-old Snellville resident who lost her left leg, right foot and both hands as a result of a rare, flesh-eating bacteria contracted following a zip-line accident. She was diagnosed with the condition in May, and she came home last weekend from her long stay in the hospital.

Norcross' "Art for Aimee" aims to assist the Copeland family with medical costs. Hosted at the Norcross Welcome Center and Museum, the fundraiser will celebrate the young woman's passion for life by showcasing the artwork from Gwinnett artist Vicki A. Johnson.

Johnson is donating a portion of her art sales from the evening to Copeland, and all proceeds collected from the event will be donated to the Aimee Copeland Fund.

Johnson's work is known for expressing "her opinion that art is an expression of intrinsic energy taking form through color, texture and creativity, and a gift to be shared universally," according to a press release. "She understands what it is like to face life-changing challenges and recognizes the perseverance and spirit that will help Aimee meet her own challenges."

Activities for the evening include Johnson's exhibit, live music, jazz vocals, and a chance to meet Copeland and her bubbly personality and indomitable spirit. 

The event will take place Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Norcross Welcome Center and Museum, located at 189 Lawrenceville Street in downtown Norcross.
