Norcross Art Fest Spotlight: Vicki Bangs

The Norcross Art Fest is just around the corner for Oct. 6-7, and Norcross Patch is profiling different vendors for the 2012 festival.

Vicki Bangs is a sixth-time Norcross Art Fest vendor who has named her creates frog sculpture art out of metal and is intended for the outdoors. Before the fest, Patch asked her about her inspiration, pieces of work and heroes.

Under what genre is your art classified as? Copper metal yard art.

How would you describe your art to a complete stranger? When you enter my whimsical Froggy world you’ll see a mix of garden critters, a praying mantis here and there, and a smattering of snakes, but most of all you’ll see frogs. Big frogs, funny frogs. My froggie friends range in size from 2 to 4 feet tall and all are meant to make you laugh.

How long have you been producing art? How did you first get started in art? I have been creating my whimsical critters for about 10 years. I am self taught and still learning. The frogs are born at the recycling center and coaxing out their distinctive personalities requires hours of hard work. After cutting, heating, pounding, texturing, soldering and a quick acid bath to get that beautiful green patina stylish frogs are known for, they are ready to go out into the world on their own.

Who are your art heroes? Most of my art heroes are the other artists I have met at shows.

What inspires you? I am inspired by everyday life. My frogs do just about anything that humans do.

What is your favorite piece in your own collection? Why? My favorite piece is Jacques Cous " Toad " he is a scuba frog with a camera.

Where do you live? I live on the river in a sleepy river town of 350 people in Westport, Ky.

Are you a full-time artist, or do you have another occupation? I work on my art five to seven days a week, depending on the time of year.

How many times has your art been featured in the Norcross Art Fest? This is my sixth time doing Norcross.
