Lionheart Theatre Presents In Lieu of Flowers

The Lionheart Theatre in Historic Norcross premiers the original production In Lieu of Flowers by Atlanta playwright Daphne Mintz, directed by Tanya Caldwell. Performances now through Feb. 13.

There is a mystery brewing at Lionheart Theatre that can only be solved by seeing this premier production of "In Lieu of Flowers."

Atlanta playwright Daphne Mintz has created a work that leads us through a tale of love and self-discovery. The play opens with the death of a beloved father, uncle and friend. We watch as the characters unravel some mysteries about themselves and other.

Director Tanya Caldwell said enjoyed directing this work. “There are two different stories going on," she said. "It’s a tale of comfortable love versus desperate love.” As one of the characters puts it, “Desperate love makes you feel sexy and alive, but not safe and taken care of.”

Caldwell brought this story to the stage with blocking that provided powerful pictures that drive the plot. The set design and props were fresh and creative, fleshing the scenes out with many intricate details.

The play, starring a strong ensemble cast, carries the story well. A few opening night hesitations in delivery were easy to over look considering the strength of the performances. The cast, in order of appearance as living people (you’ll understand if you see it) is Robb Douglas (James), Lydia Bolen Gordon (Lou), Kirk D. Henry (Damon) and Nadir Maleen (Eddie).
