Drama, Drama, Drama--Summer Camp at Lionheart Theatre

Dramatic things are happening for kids this summer at the Lionheart Theatre in downtown Norcoss.

Kids and teens with a dramatic flair can develop and improve acting and singing skills at summer drama camps held at the Lionheart Theatre. Sean Casey, camp director, says that the goal of the camp is “to help children experience creative fun and expression. To make being on stage magical for them.”

Years ago Sean Casey left his job at a PR firm where he was a writer and, while still freelancing, took on the very satisfying job of stay-at-home dad. During that time, as he enjoyed watching his children, Sam and Dorey, participate in theatrical performances Casey thought, “I want to do that too.”

During the school year Casey teaches classes in creative writing, teen playwriting, journalism and elementary school drama. During the summer he runs the Music and Drama Camps at the Lionheart Theatre.

Casey's love for the endeavor is evident. “Seeing a child’s eyes get big as they realize that they can be on stage, have lots of fun and become a character is priceless. That’s the thrill for the teachers.”

The first kids camp at Lionheart is for the youngest crowd. Ages 4 to 8 are welcome to attend the Dr. Seuss Storybook Camp, June 20through 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This will be the first stage experience for most campers and promises to be fun and creative. These kids not only learn some acting skills but may have the chance to act out characters that they’ve been dreaming of. The Sneetches, The Zax and Green Eggs and Ham will all be a part of this weeks activities.

Next, on July 25 through 29, come two different camp opportunities. In the morning is the Drama and Music camp for 7 to 13 year olds. From 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. kids will learn to express their acting and singing skills in a non-threatening environment.

In the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. an Advanced Musical Theatre program will be held, which it’s best to have some prior experience. Adults are welcome to attend this camp as well. At both of these July camps, not only will Casey be in charge but voice and choreography instructor Marissa Silner will be working as well

Also, don't miss the teen (ages 12 to 19) playwriting camp, which Casey says on the website is, “...not like school.” The camp runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, noon to 2 p.m., beginning June 13. This camp only will be held at the Onion Man Production office in Lilburn.
