The Zumba Craze has Arrived in Norcross

Zumba, the new dance-fitness craze, has come to town.

Three words came to mind when I checked out the Zumba class that travels to Norcross every Saturday – fun, fun and fun.

Zumba is the hottest new workout trend that’s taking the country by storm. It incorporates salsa, merengue, reggaeton, samba and other fat-burning dance moves. The Zumba slogan, “Ditch the workout, join the party,” really says it all.

The class, hosted by Zumba Atlanta, is offered at 10 a.m. every Saturday at the Norcross Cultural Arts and Community Center located at 10 College Street. Park in the back of the building and enter through the metal doors.

It costs $15 to drop-in and you can pay with cash or check. But, you can also buy a class card which will make it cheaper, bringing the cost as low as $12 or $9 per class.

The instructor, Janet Ackerman, starts by warming everyone up. The music is fitting to the dance moves. You’ll hear the official Zumba music along with familiar, Latin-inspired hits by artists like Shakira and Daddy Yankee.

The dance moves aren’t too hard to follow and they really do get your blood pumping. You don’t even realize the great cardio you’re getting until the song ends and you have a moment to stop and sip some water. It’s an excellent replacement for an evil, monotonous treadmill.

Although it’s geared towards cardio, you’ll also do moves designed to target and tone specific areas in the legs, behind and arms.

You’ll move your hips a lot, which is fun, and you’ll do footwork and jumping moves that help with the cardio aspect. A lot of the moves are something you would see on the dance floor at a salsa club.

Coming in May, there will also be a class offered on Thursdays at 6 p.m. Be sure to look out for the Groupon coming soon as well, probably in May.

Ackerman is a Zumba pioneer. She founded Zumba Atlanta and participated in one of the very first training sessions ever offered by Beto Perez, the inventor of Zumba. She has taught in Chile, Singapore, Mexico, India, China and all over metro Atlanta.
