Viewfinder: Having a Field Day, an Amateur Radio Field Day

A radio event let people in a local park make contact with others around the country--and the world--through Morse code.

Mayday, mayday:

The Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society participated in the American Radio Relay League's annual Field Day emergency communications exercise at on Saturday afternoon. 

Ham radio junkies, including Norm Schklar of Norcross, made contact with other operators in 50 U.S. states and 10 Canadian provinces as well as international station. More than 35,000 people around the world participate in the event, according to the American Radio Relay League website

The group uses temporary antennas to test their ability to make contact without commercial radio frequencies.
