The 5K and 2K races in Norcross started off a day filled with kids games, music and family fun.

The Dare to Dash 5K and Family Fun Day, formerly known as All Aboard for a Cure, returned for its sixth year in Historic Downtown Norcross.

Hundreds of adults and kids took part in the 5K and 2K races that kicked off the event in Thrasher Park on Saturday morning (April 27). Music and activities followed in the park until noon when the festival moved down the street to Lillian Webb Park the continue the family fun.

More than $60,000 was raised for the event, which is a $20,000 increase from last year. All proceeds benefit the Ainsley Paige Higgins' Dare to Hope Foundation Inc., which aims to help children with rare and serious diseases, and the Palliative Care Team at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

"We couldn't have done it without our sponsors, committee and the cooperation of Norcross," said Dare to Dash founder Lisa Severtis-Higgins. "One of the highlights was the appearance and music of The Oswald Brothers Band. They were wonderful and everyone loved them!"

The event also had a special event spearheaded by the local Girl Scouts. They made a butterfly garden in Thrasher Park to memorialize Severtis-Higgins' 6-year-old daughter, Ainsley, who died almost a year ago from a rare disease.

"It was also touching at the butterfly release by troop 164 and other troops in the Norcross area who grew butterflies this spring," added Severtis-Higgins.
