Why Mailboxes? Norcross Students Practice Creative Repurposing

A mailbox was the furthest type of canvas I imagined, but with a little help from some local artists these old mailboxes were transformed them into works of art!

While collecting the decorated items for the silent auction at Norcross Art Fest this weekend, a neighbor stopped and asked me why mailboxes?  I simply said, "When life gives you lemons you make lemonade." In this case Cindy Flynn of Splash Festivals, Inc. collected metal mailboxes from a subdivision that was changing them out and this year we are introducing decorated mailboxes as Garden Art – talk about reuse and recycle. This art project is doing just that.

Not knowing what the next steps would be we called on the mother/daughter artist team of Susie Schklar and Jackie Schklar to decorate two of the metal mailboxes as examples.  Susie’s design showcases houses on hills and now gracefully welcomes the local mailman at the new Norcross Arts Center located at 17 College Street across from Norcross City Hall.

Jackie found another use for her assigned mailbox and decided to make it a planter!  The mailbox/planter has a rustic look and is decorated with leaves.  When it comes to creativity these two artists wasted no time in leaving their mark on these mailboxes.
