Summerour Middle School's 2nd Walking School Bus

Continuing to make walking to school more fun for our students, a "walking school bus" will take place on Oct. 19. Volunteer to walk with Summerour Middle School students.

Ever wondered what a walking school bus looks like?  It's where a group of students who normally ride the school bus decide to walk to school in groups lead by their parents and community volunteers.  The students of Summerour Middle School will be participating in another Safe Routes To School fun event - the Walking School Bus - on Oct. 19.  Earlier this year over 100 students took part in the two-day event that included a Bike Rodeo.  With International Walk to School Day celebrated a few weeks ago, it’s time to get the students engaged while we still have great fall weather.

Under the guidance of Connie Weathers of Sustainable Norcross, the Safe Routes to School program at Summerour Middle School has been selected as of 1 of 6 in Georgia to receive assistance from the National Safe Routes to School Professionals in creating a Transportation Plan for Norcross.

There are several reasons to make a community walkable including stronger communities, less pollution, less traffic congestion and most of all better health.  It is known that people who live in walkable communities, are more active, enjoy cleaner air, and experience fewer car crashes.  Walking helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, and strokes.
