Reflections PTA Contest Winners Announced

The judges of Norcross Elementary School's Reflections Art Contest talk about their experience. And we announce the winners!

By Arlene Beckles

Sometimes you just have to stay in the background and let the community do the talking, this is one of those times.  The judges of the PTA Reflections Contest have spoken!

I was inspired today by the art teacher and her students and I wrote a little piece so I could remember the experience of my visit to Norcross Elementary School.

From the outside, it’s a brick building where students from kindergarten to 5th grade are taught.  Several Norcross Art Alliance affiliates were asked to judge a national art contest sponsored by the PTA.  When we arrived, three 5th grade art club members greeted us. They were poised, prepared and well-mannered.  The subject was “diversity” and entries in the contest were well thought out and original. Bobbie Adamczyk teaches art to these students and it is evident that her enthusiasm effects student learning and attitudes.

"With all of the negative reports about the education system in general, you don’t expect this kind of environment.  Devotion to education and creativity are alive and well in this school and anyone who thinks the arts are not necessary in a child’s growth is sadly mistaken." Susie Schklar - Artist

"Fabulous experience! Our escorts were tremendous. The children were warm and gracious. They made us feel welcome and the school was neat as a pin, a really good experience!!! Wish their interpretation of diversity was shared by some
adults." Ed Flynn – Splash Festivals, Inc

"First of all we were greeted by three of the brightest smiles you can receive on any rainy day.  I will have to give it two thumbs up for all of the imaginative xplanations on the subject of diversity.  Well done Norcross Elementary!" Denis Rowe – Norcross Resident

"The artwork was very well done- I loved the different interpretations of Diversity and was really impressed with the overall talent and quality of the work- there are some very talented young artists in this school- I hope we can provide a supplemental arts education for them to expand their minds and creativity at the Nest!" Lori Sturgess – Director, The Nest

And the winners are:
Kindergarden - Kambree Malone
1st Grade - Gabriel Coronado
2nd Grade - D'Sean Phearson
3rd Grade - Geena Lee
