One Book...Several Possibilities!

What do Sustainable Norcross, Norcross Arts Alliance, Norcross Cluster Schools Partnership and the imagination have in common? Books, of course.

The question that begs to be answered is what do Better World Books, Sustainable Norcross, Norcross Arts Alliance and Norcross Cluster Schools Partnership have in common?  To get an answer, there was a meeting of the minds with the representatives of Better World Books, Norcross Cluster School Partnership co-founder Ranae Heaven and myself.

I was surprised to say the least when the two representatives began talking about Better World Books (BWB).  Within a few minutes there was a doodled of a strategic plan connecting four organizations with the potential to benefit not only the citizens of Norcross but this collaborative effort has the potential to have a global impact.

  • BWB is a for-profit social enterprise that collects and sells books online with each sale generating funds for literacy initiatives in the U.S. and around the world
  • BWB diverts books from landfills by conducting book drives on 1,800 college campuses and by collecting discards from over 2,000 libraries.
  • Since its founding in 2003, the Mishawaka, Ind.-based company has raised almost $9 million for its non-profit literacy and library partners; donated over 3.3 million books; re-used or recycled over 40 million books, saving space in landfills; achieved over 17,000 tons of carbon offsets through carbon-neutral shipping.

In the coming weeks, information will be distributed about the project and collection bins will be placed around the community to collect books.  These books will be sold on the Better World Books online website, with a portion the funds coming back to help support the following projects:
