It’s Cinco de Mayo – Let the Norcross Volunteer Season Begin!

Summer in Norcross means events and fun every weekend. With all the activities ahead, lots of volunteers needed. Here's how to help out.

The month is just five days old and Norcross is living up to its name: A Place to Imagine.  After the rain comes the sun and thoughts of the upcoming summer months.  I love Norcross in the warmer months and all that it has to offer.

I compare the amount of events in Norcross to the amount of public holidays we have back in Barbados – every weekend something is going on in our little town and these types of events cannot be successful unless we have volunteers.  From assisting with finger-painting to pitching a tent or just handing a runner a saving sip of refreshing ice-water these are things that are done behind the scenes and can either make or break the event.

That said, with all the events that we put on here in Norcross the question that begs to be asked is: What makes a good volunteer?

In my humble opinion, anyone willing to devote some time can be a valuable volunteer.  Purpose is the key factor, as shown by many of our local citizens.  The joy of seeing a group of people offer their time, talent and knack for getting things done is a purpose in itself.  Many of the same qualities that help each of us succeed in our daily lives can make anyone an especially effective volunteer: flexibility, patience, energy, desire to help and give back, willingness to listen and to share, initiative, commitment and, most of all, passion.  There are several non-profit, church and civic organizations in the area that are constantly in need of volunteers for their events.

Here is a snapshot of the events for May:

  • Lionheart opens Big River May 6 through the 22
  • Coopers & Colors opens at The Welcome Center on May 11
  • Friday, May the 13 would not be the same without Spooky Sally Toole and The Ghost Tour
  • Not forgetting our unique kids, CHUK will be out to support the Norcross Police on May 14.   Starting at 1 p.m., the first person to find me and tell me what CHUK means will get a special prize!
  • A Classical Evening in May is set for Sunday, May 15 the middle of the month time to take a breather!   The first couple that can tell me where I’m originally from during intermission will get a special prize!

A few weeks ago I jokingly asked Anne Labaire to paint of portrait of me so that I can be everywhere I needed to be!  If this is just the beginning of the month there is no telling how many other events can spring up by now and month end, with school almost out a Bike Rodeo or Walking School Bus could be the order of the day.  I definitely have to follow-up with Ms. Labaire on that portrait, looks like I will need it.

Volunteering for these events is a fun experience and I encourage you to come out and enjoy an event from the eyes of a volunteer.  Visit the Volunteer tab on Norcross Patch for opportunities, or reach out to me for more information.
