Septic Care

When properly maintained, your septic system can last almost a lifetime. Understanding how to preserve your septic system can give you years of optimal performance. Here are some tips to extend the life of your septic system and drainfield. Install an aerator to convert your anaerobic tank into an aerobic septic system. This will improve the efficiency of the decomposition that takes place in your tank. Pump your septic tank when needed. Regular septic pumping can remove items that build up in your tank such as toilet paper, cooking oils and grease, disposable diapers, feminine hygiene products, latex-based paints, latex products, pesticides, hazardous chemicals, disinfectants, other inorganic material and cat litter, and allow the tank to decompose as it should. This will lessen the number of septic back-ups and slow draining problems inside your home. Inspect your distribution box, which transfers water between the tank and the drainfield. Clogged, broken and misplaced pipes can cause water to build up around the septic tank, the distribution box or in the drainfield area. Use only chemical cleaning products that are designed for septic systems when doing household work. They won't disrupt the beneficial bacteria that live inside your septic tank. Usually, these products are environmentally friendly, too.
