Viewfinder: Norcross Car Show

Thousands of people roamed the streets of Norcross to see the display of 308 vintage cars.

Vintage Fords, Chevys and Oldsmobiles revved up their engines and hung out in downtown Norcross for the car show Saturday. Celebrating its 15th year, the Norcross Car Show drew in thousands of people to see a display of 308 cars and motorcycles, dating as early as the 1900s. Hot dogs and hamburgers were for sale, in addition to baked goods, t-shirts, silent auction items, and raffle tickets for a $1,700 Primo grill and a completely finished 350 Chevrolet motor.  While the event is fun for all ages, the car show is for a good cause, too: All funds go to the Kristi Memorial Scholarship, which financially aids in medical scholarships for elligible college students. This year, 13 scholarships were awarded from the $18,200 that was raised. The …

'The Dictator' Kicks Sand in Face of Political Correctness

Funnyman Sasha Baron Cohen is at it again, this time as a flashy, offensive Middle Eastern dictator who comes to the U.S.

From the guy who brought us Ali G and Borat comes a new character named General Aladeen -- a ruthless dictator from a fictional country in North Africa who is part buffoon, horn dog and ruthless bloodthirsty ruler in "The Dictator." Through a ridiculous set of circumstances, that I will spare you the details because they are so contrived, Aladeen ends up in New York while his even sillier double is in charge of his country. There are plenty of cameo appearances from big stars to keep things interesting. As for the element of political satire we get a pretty heavy-handed lecture that borders on being a bit corny. The Dictator, like so many other characters by Cohen, is offensive but somehow there is a certain likeability to him. "The …

This play was hilarious btw. I love local theater because it's about the "best bang for your buck". If you go on www.Goldstar.com you can get tickets at about 30% off after their fee; and sometimes more. I was able to get tickets to this show, for instance, at $7 each (whereas the box office has them at $25 a pop). Plus, local artists put so much passion into their work. We've even started to …   more ›

Norcross Elementary Presents 'Rumpelstiltskin, Private Eye'

The school's drama club will be performing the play Monday at Thrasher Park.

The school year may be almost over, but usually it doesn't end without a big bang. The drama club at Norcross Elementary School is heading to the Thrasher Park Amphitheatre this Monday, May 21, for its production of "Rumpelstiltskin, Private Eye." "This will be the students' first performance for an open audience," said Kathleen Allen, the school's PTA president. Featuring 17 second and third graders from the school’s FOCUS program, the play is more than just a twist on Rumpelstiltskin; it's a mash-up of multiple fairy tales. Rumpelstiltskin is still a miller in this story, but he's also a private investigator. His daughter is kidnapped by the greedy king because he thinks she can spin gold, so Rumpelstiltskin investigates the case to try …

Painting in a New Direction

Chalk It Up Norcross inside The Nest offers a different type of paint that's user-centered and can stick to anything.

If you hate to paint or you're a wallpaper person, Chalk It Up Norcross just may change your opinion. Chalk It Up Norcross, located in The Nest in downtown, offers a different kind of paint than what most are used to. Chalk paint, as opposed to the usual latex paint, is a heavily pigmented acrylic paint that can stick to virtually anything: glass, furniture, wood, floors, ceramics, anything. It can give an old antique look to something you've been wanting to restore but just didn't have the time to, and it can add a small silver accent to kitchen moldings. It can even give a pottery barn finish to a picture frame that's been flaking for years. What's more amazing about chalk paint is the varieties of things you can do with it while only …

Vargas & Harbin Debut Cuban Exhibition

Community members browsed the gallery filled with art from nine Cuban artists.

On Saturday in an opening wine reception, Vargas & Harbin Studio Gallery debuted its latest exhibition, "Come Together," featuring Cuban artists who have a outstanding history together. Nine prominent artists who once hailed from Havanna, Cuba, have reunited for the first time after thirty years to put together a collection celebrating their roots. The nine Cubans were students at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Art, the country's oldest and most prestigious arts school. "It's amazing because after all those years, we notice how we change," said Reinaldo Vargas, co-owner of the gallery. Vargas also curated the exhibition and featured many of his own mixed-media works. Some of the other artists include: "We bring all the passion we have …

A Night Out for Asian Teens

The first-ever AYEP Night, a music, arts and empowerment festival showcasing the talents of Asian teens, was a hit.

This past Saturday a slew of Asian-American youths between the ages of 14 and 21 gathered in the parking lot of The Hong Kong Supermarket on Jimmy Carter. Many of them were performing for the evening's festivities and even more of them actually helped plan and execute the event, which was the first of its kind in Norcross. AYEP Night offered music and dance performances by youths, guest speakers like Mayor Bucky Johnson, food, games, and career and college community booths where teens could speak with representatives from various colleges. Although the event was hosted by the Asian Youth Empowerment Program (AYEP), it was a youth-led event. “We have over 50 volunteers, and they're all youths,” said Youth Program Coordinator Kim Nguyen. “…

Eddie Owen Reportedly Fired From Eddie's Attic

'Eddie Owen Presents' continuing to stage concerts at Red Clay Theatre in Duluth. Three concerts scheduled this week.

Atlanta Magazine social columnist Rich Eldredge reported Monday (May 14) in his Eldredge ATL blog that Eddie Owen was fired last Friday from Eddie’s Attic in Decatur based on a post Monday morning by Owen on his personal Facebook page. The post has since disappeared, but Owen’s Eddie’s Attic fans had expressed dismay at his dismissal and promised to follow him to Duluth. Owen had resigned last October as general manager of Eddie’s Attic under the previous ownership as he prepared to launch his “Eddie Owen Presents” concerts at the Red Clay Theatre in downtown Duluth. The first EOP concert at RCT occurred in December. Owen then agreed to assist Alex Cooley and Dave Mattingly, new owners of the Decatur music venue, with booking acts. They …
