RockTenn Organizes Strawberry Stroll for Third Year

The annual run, which benefits Kingdom Kids, will be in Thrasher Park on Saturday, May 25. Organizer and RockTenn employee Kris Rodgers talks about what to expect for 2013.

It's now spring, which means strawberry season is upon us and soon it'll be time for the Strawberry Stroll 5k in Norcross.

Organizer Kris Rodgers and his team at RockTenn is hard at work in preparing the race for the third year, which will take place May 25 in Thrasher Park.

The Strawberry Stroll benefits Kingdom Kids, a nonprofit formed in Norcross that helps local children and families battling anything from leukemia to physical abuse. Similar to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Kingdom Kids grants wishes as big as a trip to Disney World to as small as gas cards.

"I went to one of their golfing events and thought, 'This is great,'" said Rodgers, who's the marketing specialist for the RTS division in Norcross.

Rodgers, along with other RockTenn employees, planned the first 5k in 2011. They teamed up again for last year's race, which brought in nearly 200 runners.

For 2013, not only is the number of participants expected to be higher, there are a lot more activities and changes happening. The 5k course will be in reverse from last year, to try to make the course easier in terms of hills for runners. Additionally, the shirts given to 5k participants have been improved from a regular cotton tee to a running shirt.

After the race, participants can listen to live bands and even browse a vendor fair filled with local artisans, craftsmen, vendors and community members. Last year, the only vendor available was Dahlonega Vegetable Farms, which brought fresh strawberries to sale.

The 2013 race is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, in Thrasher Park. Register for the race on the Strawberry Stroll page on Active.com.

All the proceeds will benefit Kingdom Kids, so if you want to lend a hand and volunteer, contact Heather Richmond at hrichmond@rocktenn.com. If you're interested in becoming a vendor, contact Lauren Hutchinson at lhutchinson@hotmail.com, and for general questions about the race, contact Kris Rodgers at krodgers@rocktenn.com.
