Pickleball: It Could Be Your Next Favorite Sport at the YMCA
"Pickleball is the most, fun, addictive game you can play," says one new Pickleball player. Similar to tennis, it's quickly becoming a favorite at Fowler YMCA.
The fast-growing sport of Pickleball is gaining momentum in popularity at Fowler YMCA in Peachtree Corners by players of all ages.
Similar to tennis, Pickleball is played on a hard floor court with a three-foot net between the players. However, instead of a tennis ball and racket, Pickleball is played with wiffle balls and wooden paddles.
The Pickleball scene at the Y is both lively and social. The players take their fair turns on the court and enjoy cheering one another on whhile waiting to play.
Here’s what a few Pickleball enthusiasts said about the game:
- “What I like about it is that you can take it to any level you want - you can play for fun, or you can play a fast-paced, competitive game" said Craig Lovingood.
- “Pickleball is the most fun, addictive game you can play” said Pam Griffin.
- “Pickleball is a lots of FUN and it doesn’t feel like you are exercising and it’s fun for all ages” said Gloria Teague-Triplett.
According to the USA Pickleball Association, the game was invented in 1965 by a congressman and his friends wanting a game their families could play on an old badminton court.
Using homemade wooden paddles and a plastic ball, they began to play and the game took shape. However, every time the ball bounced close to the family dog, aptly named “Pickles,” the dog would grab it and run away.
Pickleball was born.
If you would like to check out the game, don't hesitate to drop by the Y on Mondays and Thursday from 10 to 1 and watch a few games.
But come prepared, because it won't take long for Pickleball enthusiasts to convince you to join in.
