GAC Alum Saves 12 Lives
The class of '07 alumnus received the Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medal.
Thomas McAurthur, an aviation survival technician in the Coast Guard and GAC alum, was doing some off-duty training at Frankfort Beach in Lake Michigan, when he noticed a strong undertow.
McAurthur's instincts must have kicked in: He ended up rescuing 12 people from the water in the course of one hour, according to a release from the school. Children, teens and adults were among those brought to safety by the young man.
The Greater Atlanta Christian School alumnus recently received a Silver Lifesaving Medal from the Coast Guard for this heroic effort.
He is currently stationed in Traverse City, MI.
