A 72-year-old Norcross man on a scooter died from a collision Saturday at the intersection of Beaver Ruin Road and Indian Trail Road.
James Scarbrough died on scene following the wreck involving a passenger vehicle, said Norcross Police spokesman Capt. Brian Harr.
Scarbrough was waiting for a green light in order to turn left onto Beaver Ruin when a car ran through a red light and hit him.
Scarbrough was an instrumental part of Sustainable Norcross, among other city projects, said city PR manager Tixie Fowler.
Harr said charges are pending against the car's driver, Lorena Cortez-Nova. The 46-year-old was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center to be treated and has been released.
Around 5 p.m. Saturday, Norcross Police sent out an email and text message advisory through Nixle to avoid the intersection at Beaver Ruin and Indian Trail because of the wreck.
"A vehicle crash near has closed the intersection and will require a detour of traffic for the next several hours," says the message. It also suggests taking I-85 and Buford Highway as alternative routes.
On-scene photographer Kate Awtrey reported that officers were rerouting cars through the strip mall parking lot on the corner of the intersection.
Investigators restructured the scene Monday morning on the eastbound lane of Beaver Ruin at Indian Trail for a follow-up investigation. The lane was shut down from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m, said Norcross Police spokesman Capt. Brian Harr in a press release.
The funeral and visitation have been scheduled for Scarbrough.
