FedEx Ground Opens Automated Distribution Facility in Norcross
CITY OF NORCROSS/GWINNETT COUNTY/NORTH METRO: November 2, 2012 - Gwinnett Chamber Economic Development and Georgia Department of Economic Development and City of Norcross officials joined with FedEx Ground, a subsidiary of FedEx Corporation, at a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its newly-built automated distribution center. The facility - located at 6265 Atlantic Boulevard, Norcross - represents a $43 million investment in the local community.
"FedEx Ground's growing presence in Georgia plays a significant role in the community of logistics service providers that make up our state's high performing logistics infrastructure," said Chris Cummiskey, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development. "This new distribution center will leverage Georgia's position as a global logistics hub to help FedEx Ground provide the high level of service its customers expect. Georgia is glad to play a part in FedEx Ground's growth in the Southeast."
The 216,000-square-foot distribution facility will provide business-to-business shipping services to the metro Atlanta area and features the most updated automated material-handling technology.
Gwinnett County Commissioner Chairman Charlotte Nash stated, "We celebrate FedEx Ground's continued investment into the Gwinnett community and the significant contribution this announcement will have on the area's existing logistics and supply chain industry."
Gwinnett County boasts an extensive network of logistical and transportation options, allowing its businesses to remain connected nationally and globally. Supporting more than 320 logistics providers, employing over 6,770 Gwinnettians, and generating in excess of $1 billion in annual sales, Gwinnett is home to a thriving supply chain industry.
"Norcross is proud to offer an advantageous location and city support for the success of FedEx Ground and the logistics industry," stated Mayor Bucky Johnson of the City of Norcross. "The opening of this new facility speaks volumes to our community's ability to support its companies and allow them to remain competitive in metro Atlanta and around the world."
The ribbon cutting event demonstrated yet another win for Gwinnett Chamber Economic Development and its efforts to recruit supply chain management companies to the Gwinnett area and retain those with an existing presence. One of the County's targeted industries, Supply Chain Management, is focused on the use of technology to manage and optimize the entire logistics process.
"With its strong workforce, excellent infrastructure and expansive network of companies in supply chain and material handling, Gwinnett County is a perfect location for this 21st century, highly-automated regional distribution center," stated Troels Adrian, Project Manager for Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management, Gwinnett Chamber Economic Development and Partnership Gwinnett. "We are delighted that one of the leaders in the supply chain industry is continuing to create jobs and investment in our community, and we look forward to supporting FedEx Ground in their growth for many years to come."
